چکیده

Abstract The sediment load in the Yangtze River downstream of Three Gorges Dam (TGD) has substantially declined recent decades. decrease is more profound below TGD, e.g., a 97% at Yichang, compared with that delta apex, 1200 km downstream, 75% decrease, implying along-river recovery. Two large river-connected lakes, i.e., Dongting and Poyang Lakes, may play role re-establishment river’s morphodynamic equilibrium, but quantitative data-based understanding this interaction not yet available. In work, we collected series field data to quantify gain loss river-lake system middle-lower River, evaluate lake’s response reduction riverine supply. We find Lake shifted from net sedimentation erosion 2006 2000, back regime again after 2017 2018, respectively. Natural adaptation sand mining an important changes whereas dominates abrupt Lake. contributed maximum by 38% (2015) 17% (2006) (respectively) recovery regime, riverbed main source. These relative contribution sources also indicates time ~ 20 years lakes towards new equilibrium state. It noteworthy lakes’ buffer effects be overestimated as supplied rather small significant dam trapping upstream basin source degradation. results imply river management restoration should take into account interactions feedback impact decadal scales.

Sedimentation in the Three Gorges Dam and the future trend of Changjiang (Yangtze River) sediment flux to the sea

The Three Gorges Dam (TGD) on the upper Changjiang (Yangtze River), China, disrupts the continuity of Changjiang sediment delivery to downstream and coastal areas. In this study, which was based on 54 years of annual water and sediment data from the mainstream and major tributaries of Changjiang, sediment deposition induced by the TGD in 2003–2008 was quantified. Furthermore, we determined the ...

Impact of the Three Gorges Dam on the Hydrology and Ecology of the Yangtze River

Construction and operation of the Three Gorges Dam (TGD) has significantly altered the downstream hydrological regime along the Yangtze River, which has in turn affected the environment, biodiversity and morphological configuration, and human development. The ecological and environmental systems of the middle and lower Yangtze River have been affected adversely, with the ecosystems of Poyang La...

Detection of the Three Gorges Dam influence on the Changjiang (Yangtze River) submerged delta

While most large river-deltas in the world are facing the risk of subsidence and erosion in the Anthropocene, it is suspected that the Changjiang submerged delta (CSD) could be subjected to the impacts of the world's largest dam, the Three Gorges Dam (TGD). Here we firstly indicate that the CSD went through high accumulation (1958-1978); slight accumulation (1978-1997), slight erosion (1997-200...

THE WHOLE DAM STORY: A Review of the China Yangtze Three Gorges Dam

Some marvel at these massive structures as engineering wonders that provide inestimable public benefit – things like flood control, water supply, hydroelectric power, improved navigation and water recreation. Yet others don’t share this appreciation and have doubts about the ability of humankind to effectively harness nature, particularly the power of the world’s mighty rivers. They decry the d...

Assessment of Hydrologic Alterations Caused by the Three Gorges Dam in the Middle and Lower Reaches of Yangtze River, China

Hydrologic regime plays a major role in structuring biotic diversity within river ecosystems by controlling key habitat conditions within the river channel and floodplain. Daily flow records from seven hydrological stations and the range of variability approach were utilized to investigate the variability and spatial pattern of the hydrologic alterations induced by the construction of the Three...
